Greenwood is a large suburban city positioned in Johnson County, Indiana. It is located about 14 miles south of Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were approximately 56,545 people living in Greenwood in 2016. Greenwood is the largest city in Johnson County.
Before European-American settlers arrived in the area of present-day Greenwood the territory was occupied by Native American Indians. The first European-American settler to establish himself in the area was Kentucky native John B. Smock. Along with his brother Isaac, John Smock arrived in 1823. John and his family named their settlement Smocktown. In 1825, Smocktown became Greenfield. About 3 years later a post office was established. In 1833, the name of the town was changed to Greenwood and about 30 years later the community was incorporated as a town.
