Clayton is a small town located in central Indiana. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were about 1,000 people living in Clayton in 2016. Clayton is positioned in Hendricks County. The town is located about 30 miles west of Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana.
Clayton was originally known as Clayville. It was named Clayville in 1829. The name honored Kentucky statesman Henry Clay. In 1851, George W. Wills platted Clayville. The name of the town was changed to Clayton in 1858. The reason for the name change is that another town named Clayville existed in Dubois County in the southern region of Indiana. By the early 1900s, Clayton had electric service and a high school was transferred to the community. With a population of 497 people, Clayton was incorporated in 1909.
